Case Study

OGC Energy Helps Porthos CCUS with Corrosion Risk Assessment for CO₂ Transport

Client

Porthos CCUS

Location

Port of Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Background

Porthos is embarking on a pioneering initiative to address the challenge of CO₂ emissions in the Port of Rotterdam. The project aims to capture the CO₂ produced by industries operating in the port and transport it via an offshore pipeline to a platform located 20 km off the coast in the North Sea. Here, the CO₂ will be safely stored in depleted gas fields located more than 3 km beneath the ocean's surface.
This cutting-edge project has the potential to store approximately 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year in its early stages of operation, making a significant contribution towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As the first project of its kind in the region, Porthos is dedicated to delivering a sustainable solution that will have a positive impact on the environment for generations to come.

Challenge

Porthos needed to identify the corrosion risks of industrial CCUS associated with multiple impurities, this step is crucial to complete the first project in Europe to transport CO₂ from industry and store this in empty gas fields beneath the North Sea.

How We Helped the Client

At OGC Energy, we are dedicated to driving innovation and advancing the field of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS). We have completed a comprehensive corrosion risk assessment for CO₂ transport, which was the first of its kind to consider the impact of more than 25 impurities from different industrial sources in the Rotterdam area.
Our team leveraged their extensive expertise and cutting-edge software developed in house to evaluate the risk of corrosion and identify the main risks of corrosion and stress cracking. We then provided recommendations for corrosion monitoring, to ensure the longevity and success of the project.
We are proud of the work we have done and are committed to delivering a project that sets the standard for safety and reliability in the CCUS industry.
