An onshore operator was suffering of production loss due to corrosion. Production is sour meaning that risk to human life was high. OGC Energy helped the operator to develop and implement a Corrosion Management System.


An onshore operator growing through acquisition of mature assets was suffering of production loss due to corrosion related shutdowns and leaks. Production is sour meaning that risk to human life in nearby communities was high. The operator required a Corrosion Management System (CMS) that could be easily implemented and would provide results within a short time frame. In addition to these challenges, financial restrictions would require the CMS to have minimum investment.

Ivan Gutierrez, Managing Director of OGC Energy is a recognised expert in sour service as a GB National Expert member of the British Standard Institute committee PSE 17/67/7 “Corrosion Resistant Materials”, IOGP 15156 committee ISO/TC 67/WG 7 and a member of NACE Task Group 299 on Oversight of Maintenance Panel for NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.

The team, led by Ivan Gutierrez, prepared the documentation and system requirements for a minimalistic and highly effective CMS designed for the operator organisation. The team organised a risk assessment workshop with the client’s operations and maintenance teams to identift “quick wins” such as chemical skid refurbishment and retrofit pigging. These “quick wins” were validated and prioritised in terms of cost and benefit.

After implementation of these actions through the CMS, the result was a reduction in leaks of more than 87% and a consequential increase of production. As a result of the success of this CMS, Oil & Gas Corrosion has developed a screening tool for the operator that allows to estimate the cost of corrosion management in any asset that is considered for acquisition, the outcome is a reduction of uncertainty prior to an investment decision.
