What does NACE MR0175 mean by “Qualification based upon field experience”?

Field Experience NACE: Qualification Requirements

Introduction

In the oil and gas industry, it is important to ensure that materials used in plant operations meet the necessary standards for safety and reliability. One way to qualify a material is through documented field experience, as outlined in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-1.

Clause 8.2: Qualification Based on Field Experience

According to Clause 8.2 of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-1, a material may be qualified by documented field experience. The duration of the documented field experience should be at least two years. This clause outlines the documentation necessary for two years of successful field service.

Documentation Requirements

Paragraphs 6.2, 8.1, 8.2, and 9.0 of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-1 outline the documentation necessary for two years of successful field service. It has always been a requirement to document such experience.

Equipment Manufacturers and Field Service Documentation

The equipment user is responsible for creating the necessary documentation to show that the material can be used within a plant, based on field experience (see NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-1, Clause 9, Paragraph 1). The equipment user may choose to retain copies of this documentation for evidentiary purposes, and the equipment manufacturer may choose to retain copies for future reference.

Filing Documentation with NACE

The equipment manufacturer is not required to file information with NACE, unless they wish to do so. The manufacturer may have compiled a non-proprietary database of information.
