NACE MR0175 Requirements for Seal Welding of Vent Holes on Saddle Plates

The Importance of Seal Welding Vent Holes according to ASME B31.3

Introduction

The question pertains to the seal welding of vent holes on saddle plates that have been welded to the pipe. The vent holes were provided according to ASME B31.3 and were used as a protective shield to the pipe. However, there is now a need to close the vent holes permanently after saddle welding and PWHT to prevent corrosion in offshore conditions due to crude oil with H₂S, which is covered by NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.

Responsibility of Equipment User

The response states that the ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel cannot provide guidance on the acceptability of seal welding in this application. It is the responsibility of the equipment user to determine whether NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 applies to these seal welds by referring to the Scope in Clause 1.

Compliance Requirements

If this standard is deemed applicable, then the seal welds must comply with the requirements of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2, 7.3.3, or NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3, 6.2.2. This inquiry concerns NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 Clause 7.3.3.
