Is ASTM A105 Class 150# flange in the non-normalized is acceptable to NACE MR0175?

Is a Forged ASTM A105 Class 150# Flange in Non-Normalized Condition in Accordance with NACE MR0175 and NACE MR0103?

This page addresses a common question in the oil and gas industry. The answer is not straightforward, but we’ll do our best to explain. First, let’s define the terms:

  • NACE MR0175: A standard that specifies the requirements for materials used in H₂S-containing environments in oil and gas production.
  • NACE MR0103: A standard that specifies the requirements for materials used in CO₂-containing environments in oil and gas production.
  • ASTM A105: A specification for carbon steel forgings for piping applications.
  • Class 150#: A rating for flanges that indicates the maximum pressure they can withstand.

Now, to answer the question: The ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel can only provide an answer for NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, not for NACE MR0103. It further clarifies that “”AS FORGED”” is not an acceptable condition in A.2.1.2, and that both requirements of A.2.1.2 and A.2.1.3 of Part 2 must be fulfilled for ASTM A 105 flanges to meet NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.

If you need more information, ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel Inquiry #2009-08 is a useful reference for this question.
