NACE MR0175 and elastic or plastic design criteria

Compatibility of Metal Rupture Discs with NACE MR0175-ISO 15156

Introduction

The question concerns the compatibility of metal rupture discs with NACE MR0175-ISO 15156 based on their plastic deformation during manufacturing and bursting. This inquiry pertains to NACE MR0175-ISO 15156-1 Clause 5.

Answer from NACE MR0175 Maintenance Panel

The answer from NACE MR0175 Maintenance Panel clarifies that rupture discs are not a “Table A.1 exclusion” and must fulfill the requirements of Annex A or pass laboratory testing or field history approval from the end user. Additionally, the other panel members explained the irrelevance of plastic deformation during manufacturing to Clause 5, Paragraph 9 of NACE MR0175-ISO 15156-1. They confirmed that plastic deformation during bursting is incidental, as the rupture discs function within their elastic limit during their service life.

Conclusion

At OGC ENERGY, we offer materials selection for both elastic and plastic design criteria during the design phase. For more information on NACE MR0175-ISO 15156-1 Clause 5 and the compatibility of metal rupture discs, please refer to ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel Inquiry #2012-04.
