A geothermal operator based in Iceland was in need of technical support for CO₂ and H₂S injection and production in conditions close to magmatic intrusion zones. This required a deep understanding of both geothermal technology and metallurgical science to ensure the success and longevity of the project.
The geothermal operator wanted to re-enter abandoned wells and use them for carbon capture, but the wells were located in magmatic intrusion zones. The operator needed specialised knowledge in metallurgy to make informed decisions on material selection for the new wells. This required expertise in both geothermal technology and metallurgical science to ensure the successful implementation of the project and the longevity of the assets.
How We Helped the Client:
OGC Energy provided technical support for the re-injection of CO₂ and H₂S. Our team identified and evaluated corrosion risks, using a risk-based approach to quantify the probability of each risk and estimate the remaining life of the assets. Our team also helped the operator to identify and evaluate the corrosion risks associated with the production of supercritical fluids, including CO₂ corrosion, H₂S cracking, and other damage mechanisms. We used a quantitative risk-based approach to achieve this objective and recommended materials for new geothermal wells that allowed for the production of high enthalpy fluids from near magmatic geothermal sources.
