DESCRIPTION

At OGC Energy, we have an extensive background in CCUS, the total capacity of the projects we have enabled is over 88 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of CO₂ injection capacity. Our lessons learned combined with cross-disciplinary collaboration, materials expertise, and adaptability, allow us to ensure successful outcome of any CCUS project.

THE CHALLENGES

CCUS projects face many challenges, from defining CO₂ impurity limits, managing risk in operation, to material selection challenges for transportation. These challenges have so far been met with limited industrial standardisation for tackling them.
Early projects required guidance in determining which damage mechanisms were relevant to their operation, and the impact of the impurities on complex interactions in the thermodynamics and phase behaviour of the CO₂. Risks such as embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking, fatigue and others were assessed to determine material suitability and operating windows.
Collaborating with several clients in projects around the workd, we ensured approval processes were streamlined, maintained cost-effectiveness, and pushed for the strictest levels of safety and integrity. OGC Energy’s strategic material selection philosophy prioritised feasible solutions while enabling the project to grow and scale.

HOW WE HELPED OUR CLIENTS

At OGC Energy, we addressed the lack of regulatory framework by engaging with various stakeholders, including regulators, operators, product manufacturers, and academic institutions. This involved continuous collaboration with academic and research institutions such as the University of Sheffield, the IFE, and the University of Leeds, aimed at refining an industry approach to risk assessment. Additionally, we actively participate in AMPP standards committees for CCUS materials, including AMMP SC 26 and ISO TC 67 WG 8.
Our understanding of CO₂ transport risks and distinct damage modes, such as acid formation, well backflow, and depassivation of CRAs at the wellhead, ensures that we offer practical, straightforward solutions to manage your project's corrosion risks. We integrate expert knowledge in thermodynamics, metallurgy, and fracture mechanics to decode CO₂ phase behaviour and address fracture propagation along CO₂ pipelines, ensuring compliance with standards like DNV-RP-F104 and ISO 27914 (with the next revision coming soon!) to minimise the risk of fracture propagation.
