FAQ's

In NACE MR0175, can I qualify a fillet with a but weld coupon?

Can a WPS Qualified for a Butt Joint be Used for a Fillet Weld Joint According to NACE MR 0175?

The inquiry asks whether a weld procedure specification (WPS) qualified for a butt joint with a hardness survey carried out according to NACE MR 0175 (7.3.3.3 Figure 2) can be used for a fillet weld joint, given that a fillet weld hardness survey was not conducted.

The response states that the applicability of weld procedure qualification tests for specifications comply with the welding codes. For fillet welds, the hardness survey must comply with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2, Clause 7.3.3.3, Fig. 3.

It’s not explicitly outlined in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 whether a butt weld hardness test can qualify a fillet welding application. The requirement of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 is that the hardness values in the weld and heat affected zones stay within compliance.

To determine compliance, one may require the assistance of a consultant. If you require urgent welding support to comply with NACE MR0175, you can reach out to the respective team.
