Does NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 require production casing to be sour service compliant?

Can NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 Require Sour Service Compliant Production Casing?

OGC Energy offers material selection services for tubing, casing, and downhole components, with expertise in oilfield metallurgy and its role in well integrity. The question at hand is whether NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requires production casing to be sour service compliant if the tubing’s containment string is a sour service grade, and the bottom hole temperature below the packer meets the casing material’s operating temperature.

Related Information

The related information can be found in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 Table 1, page 2, and Section 6 of ISO 15156-1/NACE MR0175 on the evaluation and definition of service conditions for material selection.

ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel’s Reply

The ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel’s reply says that the secondary barrier must also satisfy the sour service requirements of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156. Casing grade can be used under severity 3 of Figure 1 of § 7.2.1.2 if its working temperature is always above the minimum temperature given in ISO 15156-2 Table A.3, and if the material is well defined (API grade).

For example, P110 can be used in Region 3 of the diagram Figure 1 in §7.2 of ISO 15156-2 if it is at a temperature ≥80°C 175°F. The equipment user should establish that all intended and unintended exposure conditions are accounted for.
