NACE MR0175 Requirements for Austenitic Stainless Steel Expansion Joints and Flexible Hoses

Flexible Hoses NACE: Compliance with MR0175 for Austenitic Stainless Steel Bellows

The Inquiry

The inquiry pertains to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 Table A.2 and concerns the manufacture of expansion joints and flexible hoses. Specifically, the question is whether post-cold-forming heat treatment and a maximum hardness of 22 HRC are necessary to comply with the requirements of MR0175 for austenitic stainless steel bellows.

The Response

The ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel’s response clarifies that Table A.2 is applicable to austenitic stainless steels used for any component, including bellows. Other applicable tables, such as Table A.7 for gas lift service, may exist depending on the end use of the bellows. The requirements for material condition, hardness limits, and cold forming are stated in clause A.2 if Table A.2 is the applicable table. The panel emphasizes that they are only authorized to provide interpretations of the standard’s requirements and cannot provide guidance beyond that scope.

Complying with NACE MR0175

This inquiry is in relation to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 Table A.2 (cold work), and the ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel Inquiry reference is #2012-03.
